چکیده

Advanced testing methods for the dynamics of microdevices are necessary to develop reliable marketable microelectromechanical systems (MEMS). The main purpose for MEMS testing is to provide feedback to the design-and-simulation process in an engineering development effort. This feedback should include device behavior, system parameters, and material properties. An essential part of a more effective microdevice development is high-speed visualization of the dynamics of MEMS structures. We have developed and employed a full three-dimensional-motion-characterization system for MEMS to observe the response of a gimballed microactuator, a multi-degree-of-freedom microdevice. [

Simulation and Characterization of a CMOS Z-axis Microactuator with Electrostatic Comb Drives

This paper reports the first design and its simulation and experimental results of a CMOS z-axis microactuator that utilizes the vertical electrostatic forces existing between multi-conductor comb fingers. The measured maximum displacement of the z-axis microactuator is 3.5 μm, and resonant frequency 6.17 kHz, which are in good agreement with the field simulation and the behavioral simulation r...

A rotary microactuator supported on encapsulated microball bearings

The development of a rotary microactuator supported on encapsulated microball bearings and driven by electro-pneumatic actuation is reported. The encapsulated bearing provides full support to an encased rotor, while an electro-pneumatic thrust balance is used to minimize rotor normal load. By minimizing normal load, bearing friction is reduced leading to increased speed and performance. Experim...

Modeling of a High Force Density Fishbone Shaped Electrostatic Comb Drive Microactuator

This paper presents the design and evaluation of a high force density fishbone shaped electrostatic comb drive actuator. This comb drive actuator has a branched structure similar to a fishbone, which is intended to increase the capacitance of the electrodes and hence increase the electrostatic actuation force. Two-dimensional finite element analysis was used to simulate the motion of the fishbo...

Thrust - Limited Optimal Three - Dimensional Spacecraft Trajectories

Several optimal three-dimensional orbital transfer problems are solved for thrust-limited spacecrafts using collocation and nonlinear programming techniques. The solutions for full nonlinear equations of motion are obtained where the integrals of the free Keplerian motion in three dimensions are utilized for coasting arcs. In order to limit the solution space, interior-point constraints are use...

Micromechanical Structures for Photonic Crystal Waveguide Switches

We report design and fabrication process of MEMS (Micro Electro Mechanical Systems) actuators for a new type of optical switch integrated with photonic crystal (PhC) waveguides. Thin film poly-silicon electrostatic microactuator (either a cantilever or a bridge style) is placed over a PhC waveguide to induce optical modulation by means of mechanical motion in the evanescent fields. For low volt...
